The Town of Brookhaven has been making effective use of available natural resources to maintain and enhance that quality of life. Over 22,000 homes and business on Long Island derive all or part of their electricity from the sun. The cost of solar panels has been dropping steadily over time between rebates from PSEG and federal and state tax credits.
There are several solar farms in Brookhaven. The Long Island Solar Farm (LISF) is located on the Brookhaven National Laboratory site and is currently the largest solar photovoltaic power plant in the Eastern United States. It is generating enough renewable energy to power approximately 4,500 homes and is helping New York State meet its clean energy and carbon reduction goals.
Brookhaven Town is transitioning the Yaphank landfill into an energy park which will have solar arrays, fuel cells and locally brewed methane. When complete, the facility could power more than 11,000 homes.
