Commuting Programs

The High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) program provides preferential treatment for buses, van pools, carpools and other designated vehicles, with two or more occupants,by providing lanes reserved for their use resulting in less congestion and faster travel time.

Transit Programs

The Clean Pass Vehicle Program allows certain energy-efficient hybrid and clean-fueled vehicles to use the HOV lane during peak periods regardless of the number of occupants, giving drivers the incentive to save money, gas and time.

Daily Commute

Nearly every major type of transportation serves Brookhaven, including airports, railways, ferries and several major highways.

Highway

The Long Island Expressway (LIE), or Interstate 495, is an auxiliary Interstate Highway that extends 71 miles from the western portal of the Queens-Midtown Tunnel in Manhattan to Riverhead.   Although it does not intersect it parent route, I-95, it does connect to I-95 though I-295.  The LIE is the most important part of the arterial highway program  which serves all of Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens which has a combined population of almost 8 million.
